Country Music is Taking Over the Music Business

Since the birth of the SMITH country band, the band has seen the number of audience members increase as well as their knowledge of the songs the band covers.  More and more audience members are singing the words along with us.  In addition, while at one time many people shunned country music, it is now obvious it is a leading force in the music business today.  The acceptance and embracement of country music is feeling more mainstream than ever before because the demographic of people listening to it is changing.  This audience makes more money and spends more on country music.  This latest article backs up that observation.

Country Music’s Popularity And Influence Continues To Rise

There’s no disputing that on radio dials, country music is king.

The format has been the most popular among American adults for

several years in a row. Its 15.2% market share of the listener

base dwarfs news/talk (10.6%), top 40 (8%) and adult contemporary

stations (7.6%). Radio stations are flipping to the country format

in large numbers: there were 4,002 monitored country stations in

2015, up almost 40% from the 2,874 stations in 2008. According to

a new report by Nielsen, country fans aren’t just listening:

they’re spending big bucks, too.

Nielsen pegs the median household income for country fans at

$65,000—26% higher than the national average. Country fans are

also 29% more likely than listeners of other formats to purchase a

truck or a pickup as their next vehicle. Perhaps unsurprising,

since recent hit radio songs include “Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck,”

“Truck Yeah” and “I Drive Your Truck,” just to name a few.

While the numbers of people watching the CMA awards was off the other night because of Game 7 of the World Series, there is no doubt that number would have been bigger than ever before.  The show is better produced, has better live performances and feels slicker than almost any other award show on TV.  If you missed the show, here are some performance highlights.

Concert Review: Dierks Bentley Red Rocks Amphitheater

We went the Irvine Meadows show for Dierks Bentley’s “Somewhere On A Beach” tour.  This review was right on the money.

As a HUGE Dierks Bentley fan, I’ve been anxiously waiting for Dierks Bentley to announce an Arizona show. Unfortunately, this year has yet to bring Dierks Bentley home. During a trip to Denver, Colorado I was able to get tickets to Dierks sold-out show at my bucket list venue – Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. The drive to the venue was short, but beautiful. The fall temps brought a perfect 75 degrees. The change of seasons made the trees full of vibrant autumn colors. Once at Red Rocks Amphitheater, we hiked up to the top. We took our time observing the beautiful scenery and the stage below before making our way down to our seats. When the concert began, all of the red rocks lit up from the lights. There was a cool breeze in the air making this bucket list experience perfect.

Tucker Beathard

The show was opened with a newcomer to the country scene named Tucker Beathard. Beathard has been touring with Dierks for the better part of the year. He opened the show with “Fight Like Hell,” finished up with “Whiskey in a Wine Glass,” and his current radio single, “Rock On”. Beathard was great. He had the crowed warmed up and ready to go for the rest of the night. Beathard is a new country artist worth keeping your eye on. At one point during the show Dierks joked about for the first time they had a caterer on tour, Beathard would always leave and get Taco Bell for dinner instead. So, Dierks said he would be giving Tucker a $1,000 gift card for Taco Bell for touring with him. Tucker Beathard sure knows how to “Rock on!“

Randy Houser

Randy Houser came out of the gates on fire. He started off with his recent #1 song “We Went” and it brought a contagious and exhilarating energy to the crowd. He went on to play more well-known songs such as “Goodnight Kiss”, “How Country Feels”, “Boots On”, and “Like a Cowboy”. Houser took advantage of this opportunity and held nothing back during his performance. He used his time to make an amazing impression on the crowd and prove he has a showmanship like no other. After the set was finished Houser asked the audience if he would take a moment to a take a picture with the band because he was truly amazed at the beautiful surroundings. Randy Houser is the perfect example of Pure Country and that is how he was received by the audience.

Dierks Bentley

The anticipation for Dierks Bentley to grace the stage was unreal. When he came out, there was electricity from the excitement running through the veins of the fans. Bentley opened with “On the Ridge” from his bluegrass roots. It was a huge surprise that was eagerly accepted as the crowd went wild. His set included “Tip it on Back,” “Am I the Only One,” “What the Hell Did I Say,” “I Hold On,” “It’s Different for Girls,” and many more. Surprisingly, “Black” made it on the set. Bentley spoke of the importance of the song title and what his beautiful wife means to him. At one point during the show, Bentley compared the Red Rocks setting to a big church with how the seating is arranged, “Well, a church where you can drink beer,” according to Bentley.

One of the many high points during Bentley’s performance was the introduction of Maren Morris to the stage to perform their duet “I’ll be the Moon.” They also performed “Bad Angel” with Randy Houser. Bentley’s big finale was “Drunk on a Plane” where the front part of a plane cruised on stage. Dierks fumbled around attempting to get out of the plane in an act to look a bit tipsy which got the crowd going even louder. After Dierks exited the plane more people continued to pile out. All of the plane passengers were dressed in footsie pajamas or some type of costume. This made a perfect ending to a unforgettable show. Red Rocks Amphitheater is a must see venue filled with a breath taking view surrounded by beautiful scenery. It was an honor to see Dierks Bentley perform at this iconic venue. I can’t wait to him again in his home state of Arizona!

Country Music Edition of Mean Tweets – Slays Us

I love that Jimmy Kimmel does these Country Music mean tweets.  People on the internet can be such trolls but the fact that these celebrities read and roll with these harsh comments, just make me like country musicians even more.

Here are a few of the fine moments below.

“I’m legitimately pissed off at the fact that Thomas Rhett is ugly.  Like what’re you doin man?  Your voice and looks don’t match.”

“Rascal Flatts please do us all a favor and stop making music.  You are so awful.  #sobad #spareus #soundsofdeath”

“I would rather listen to the sound of my grandpa eating a nectarine for 3:30 then listen to a Florida Georgia Line song.”
“Sam Hunt is the male version of Taylor Swift… Except his songs suck… “

“Hunter Hayes is so tiny he sleeps in a hot dog bun.”

“Didn’t really like da carrie underwood concert seem do dull it had no excitement brong bck da soccer team.”

“Little Big Town I would buy a ticket to one of you’re concerts just so I could punch each of you in the face.”

Review: Jamey Johnson delivers deep, lonesome country at House of Blues

The closing track on Jamey Johnson’s 2007 album That Lonesome Song depicts the tumultuous journey of a young country artist trying to figure out Nashville.
“I rolled into town with a sound of my own,” Johnson sings in its setup chorus, “somewhere between Jennings and Jones.”

Jamey-Johnsons-2007-album-That-Lonesome-Song

If you aren’t familiar with the Alabama crooner’s decidedly traditional country releases, that song could serve as a fitting introduction to the man. He sings and plays in styles that go far deeper than the newfangled country-pop you’re hearing everywhere now. Beer and babes rule the day, but this guy would rather sing about loneliness and self-destruction. And he’ll do it with heaping helpings of pedal steel, honky-tonk piano and Willie Nelson-style acoustic guitar.
jamey-johnson

Johnson thrilled Dallas fans on Friday at House of Blues with a live version of “Between Jennings and Jones,” during an evening of originals and covers performed with his six-piece band. Donning a t-shirt, jeans and his ever-present mountain-man beard, the 40-year-old singer met a crowd that was at times excessively talkative (maybe their buzz had kicked in) but still excited to see him.

Tunes from That Lonesome Song peppered Johnson’s setlist on Friday. After all, the sophomore album was his breakout, critically acclaimed release, one followed by only two more LPs so far. Its best known single, the heartrending family ode “In Color,” inspired a singalong, and the title tune “That Lonesome Song” set a distinctive mood with its simmering chorus and ominous steel-guitar lines.

But it was the set’s opening tune, “High Cost of Living,” that left the strongest impression. Johnson’s rich-as-maple-syrup baritone lends itself so well to those blunt regret anthems.

His sound is timeless, so it was no wonder that his original material blended so naturally with the list of classics he chose to cover on Friday.

He opted mainly for the soft and tender gems such as the ballad “Amanda,” a song both Don Williams and Waylon Jennings popularized. Johnson smoldered during his bluesy take on “I Fall to Pieces,” the recording of which is on the wonderful 2012 Hank Cochran tribute album Living For a Song. And he reminded us again of his inherent smoothness while doing George Jones’ “Tennessee Whiskey.”

While he remained stoic behind the mike aside from the occasional smile of approval for his band or the crowd’s singing, Johnson did celebrate his Lone Star visit with in song. He offered a full version of “The Yellow Rose of Texas” — maybe the saddest, prettiest rendition that’s ever crossed these ears. He also gave a nod to his own Alabama roots, following “Yellow Rose” with an outlaw-worthy treatment of “Oh! Susanna.”

Whatever he’s singing, Johnson is keeping the soul-stirring spirit of classic country relevant. Hail to the beard.
